Fibonacci poetry is a poetic form based on the structure of the Fibonacci number sequence, which is a mathematical sequence in which every figure is the sum of the two preceding it. The sequence is a fundamental characteristic of the universe that can be seen in plant life, DNA, spiral galaxies, hurricanes, and more. Each line in the poem increases in syllable count to match the sequence. Most of the Fibonacci poetry that I have seen has stopped at 6 lines, but the sequence goes on eternally, so an ambitious poet could write 20 lines of poetry where the 20th line has 6,765 syllables. Insane right? Not only is that line ludicrous, but the line before that would have 4,181 syllables.
An Explanation of the Form:
Let’s just focus on the format of the 6-line poem, (plus a secret line that is explained below).
The sequence starts with two 1s for a reason that makes sense to those who have a better understanding of math than me. I asked such an individual, who is awesome btw, what the deal was and she explained it something like this:
The Fibonacci sequence is recursive. The starting point has to be defined and since it is defined using two terms, the starting point has to have two terms, which are 0 and 1. The 0 and 1 are not computed.
0 – starting term
1 – starting term
0 + 1 = 1
1 + 1 = 2
1 + 2 = 3
2 + 3 = 5
3 + 5 = 8
Therefore, the poetic form is as follows:
0 syllables for the secret line, shhh!
1 syllable for first line
1 syllable for second line
2 syllables for third
3 syllables for fourth
5 syllables for fifth
8 syllables for sixth
So, dearest Adventurers, now that we have defined what Fibonnaci poetry is, let’s take this concept further and ask; What if Fibonnaci had been a gamer who wrote poetry using the poetic form named after him?
If Fibonacci Had Been a Gamer: Part I
get a life.
I am a gamer…
and as such, I live many lives.
If Fibonacci Had been a Gamer: Part II
and level up every year.
If Fibonacci Had been a Gamer: Part III
make your time. Base. Base.
All your base are belong to us.
So, this experiment with gaming culture and poetry has been fun. I encourage you to give it a try. Feel free to leave your own Fibonacci Gamer poetry in the comments!
